Battle games in Middle Earth

I managed to bag a bargain on e-bay thanks to a poorly worded and placed listing. This little lot consists of issues 1-50 of the battle games in middle earth magazines along with the three special editions. They have never been opened and come with all the figures. This should give me plenty of reading and all the troops I need for the first couple of journey books. I plan on using some of them for conversions for things like Rohan outriders and Osgilith vets. It does mean I have a fair few duplicate figures though so I will be listing them on various trade forums once I have had a proper sort through

Battle games mags

I am not sure why I did not get these magazines the first time round. I think it was mainly because the first few issues had figures I already had, then it went subscription only. In addition to the figures there are some good modeling articles and a fair number of scenarios to have a go at.

My bloging has not been up to much recently due to being away with work, on holiday and doing some decorating. Hopefully now all thats out of the way I can get to it a bit more.

Grima

I thought I would get a quick picture of my Grima up to get the blog posts going. I need to work on my photos but hopefully it will give you a good idea of what he looks like. This is not a figure I need for any of the journey books but it’s one I have had for ages so it was good to get him painted.

I have also finished painting the nine rangers and Tom Bombadil. I just need to do the bases and they are ready to go. On top of thatI have finished the base coat and wash on 8 Moria goblins (which will give me all the gobIins I need for the Moria games) and a mounted Wraith. So they just need highlights and basing now. What I do need to do is crack on with some of the scenic bits.

I have had a good couple of days with e-bay and I have managed to fill some of the gaps I had. I now have 9 ringwraiths on foot and I managed to get 3 mounted wraiths for a good price as well. Just two more mounted wraiths to go. I also got Arwen and Frodo on horse and a couple of bits I need for the two towers book. Pretty much all of these were funded by selling off some of my old bits as well so that’s good.

The journey of the ring

I have been a fan of Tolkien for as long as I can remember. My dad was a big fan and he read me the Hobbit and lord of the rings when I was young. I loved the films and when the games workshop picked up the figure license I was made up as I was already a Fantasy battle wargamer so these were the perfect range for me. I picked up various sets and figures over the first few years but then I kind of moved away from the hobby as jobs, marriage, mortgages and kids took priority.

Fast forward a few years and I have 9 and 7 year old boys who love the lord of the rings and wargaming. What better time to pick up where I left off with the Lord of the Rings miniatures. The plan is to work through the Games Workshop journey books building the terrain and painting up the required figures.

I have a good number of the figures needed and a good chunk of them are already painted. There are a few things I need and the plan is to try and fill these as cheaply as possible via e-bay and funding purchases by selling off stuff I no longer use. I have already managed to plug a few gaps with some e-bay purchases so I currently need to following to have all that I need for the first journey books.

2 Ringwraiths on foot

3 Mounted Ringwraiths

6 wild wargs

The Warg Chieftain

6 uruk scouts with bows

1 goblin captain (Might convert him)

Gildor (He seems very hard to find so I will probably use a stand in for him)

Watcher in the water tentacles (I plan on sculpting these)

I currently have 9 rangers on the painting table that are almost finished and the hills for the first few scenarios are almost done. which means I will have everything done for the first couple of games very soon.
